Evaluation of CAN-Based and DoIP-Enabled Telematics Control Units for Future Vehicle Architectures
As the automotive industry advances toward Software-Defined and AI-Defined Vehicle architectures, the communication requirements of Telematics Control Units (TCUs) are evolving rapidly. While the Controller Area Network (CAN) has served as the foundation of in-vehicle communication for decades, emerging technologies such as 5G, C-V2X, edge intelligence, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates are pushing CAN networks beyond their practical performance limits. Diagnostic over IP (DoIP), built upon automotive Ethernet, offers significantly higher bandwidth, enhanced scalability, and improved support for next-generation connected vehicle services. This talk presents a comparative evaluation of traditional CAN-based TCUs and DoIP-enabled TCUs, examining key parameters including data throughput, latency, diagnostics performance, cybersecurity, scalability, and system integration. The analysis highlights how Ethernet-based architectures are enabling the transition toward highly connected, software-centric vehicle platforms capable of supporting future mobility applications and intelligent transportation ecosystems.
